Ebook About Second chances take many forms… Violetta Benedetti knows how to hide things. She spent years concealing herself behind the persona her father expected of her. Now she hides in the dark corners of Vermagna’s underworld, lying low to keep her father from using her magic in his unending quest for power. But her biggest secret is her love for her best friend, who only knew her as Mercurio Benedetti, not the woman she is today. Now he's dead, and she’ll never be able to tell him the truth. Tibario Gianbellicci was dead. And then…he wasn’t. Reborn as an immortal, he has powers he never imagined. Powers his crime boss mother wants to tap into to destroy their longtime rivals: House Benedetti. But Tibario is hiding something, too: his best friend is a Benedetti—and the love of his life. With a second chance at life, he’ll have to risk revealing his heart. Gods, okay. Where do I start. The Calyx Charm was beautiful. A gorgeous story, beautifully realised by May's lush prose. It was frequently heartbreaking. This book just aches. I'm blown away by her ability to tell this story in such a way that the emotions are so honest and recognizable, while also crafting this world that is so fantastical and unfamiliar. It's absolutely her best work so far.Absolutely pick this one up if you're interested in: themes of hope and fear and rage and forgiveness. Inevitability. Love. Dreams versus reality. The magic inherent in the trans community, and an extremely vulnerable, intimate look at the feelings and realities faced by trans people, not just in Vermagna but here in our real world. I will say that you'll get more out of it due to worldbuilding and character crossover if you read Lord of the Last Heartbeat first. The Calyx Charm deals very frankly but sensitively with trauma (of many sorts). This is balanced by on-fire hotness, which doesn't feel rushed or exploitative in any way.On a related note, it's an absolute pleasure to read a book where the love interest interacts in a sensitive, appropriate way, rather than the source of conflict in the book being Tibario lacking understanding of Violetta. May has somehow managed to display this wonderful blueprint of A Good Way to Act/React/Interact, while avoiding the pitfall of making Tibario seem out of character in comparison to how we saw him through Mio's eyes in the first book. The details of his thoughts and his past really work well to realize Tibario more fully as a person who can be different things to different people in his life, and afterlife. Finally, I know reviews don't usually comment on the cover art, but I have to commend everyone who worked on this cover. When I read a book that's good enough I become truly immersed, like this one was, I see the world of that book in a colour palette unique to the mood of that story. This story is all fuschias and purples, and a very misty, grey sort of blue. The pinks and purples in my mental filter when I picture this story match the colours used on the cover *so well* it's fantastic. And Violetta on the cover *is* Violetta in my head, which is always a pleasure since it's so rare a cover model actually looks like the main character. Just beautifully executed art. I got this book originally as an advance reader copy, which I read and sent back what points I set the book down at. I wasn't asked for a review at all, though as a writer, I try to give one nonetheless. It's worth a review, a great piece.Looking back, those points weren't from lack of tension or writing, but from the places where the dread caught in my heart and overwhelmed me.I'm not going to talk at great lengths about the romance in these pages. It's a wonderful romance, beautiful, hopeful, I think so many people I know should aspire to, even if I can't imagine us actually finding one of the caliber within these pages.Instead, what jumped out at me was the horrible, crushing pressures of a child forced to take on far too much horror, far too soon, only then to be cast aside as different, and no longer useful.Violetta was once an oracle of great power, a weapon used to save the entire city. Now, she lives a humble, intentionally obscure life as one of the city's underclass, barely seen as fit to walk the streets she once saved. She cares for the people close to her, and pines for the friend she has yet to come out to.But now, she has one more prophecy: in mere days, the city is doomed—at her own hands. As someone tainted by the horrors of history and forced to bear the weight of society's unfairness, she called to me.The writing was beautiful, the characters scarred by history, burdened with the crushing weight of unfairness. The situations were weighty, even as they cared tenderly for each other, mindful of each other's wounds. Then, things get REAL and scenes crackle with the masterfully built tension worthy of a blockbuster fantasy epic, full of seemingly impenetrable fate rolling slowly towards terrible inevitability. How does one fight fate?As with May's other works, you can't imagine how things could possibly end well, then somehow—they do, and you want to cry in relief and joy.Seriously, just read it.
